What are the water damage categories
Water damage is classified in three categories. Category 1 is clean water from a supply line. Category 2 is grey water, such as appliance discharge. Category 3 is contaminated, such as sewage or ground-level storm water. The category decides what can be dried and what must be discarded.

What actually happens
- Category 1: clean supply water. Most material can be dried in place.
- Category 2: grey water. Some porous material is removed.
- Category 3: contaminated. Porous material is discarded, not dried.
- Category can escalate with time: clean water left standing does not stay Category 1.
